We need you!

VOLUNTEERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE at St. Andrew's. Volunteers are asked to commit to a full school term, for at least two hours per week. Full-time volunteers are very welcome. Unfortunately we are not able to offer any financial help for volunteers.

The 2009-10 School TERMS are as follows:
 31 August - 18 December 2009;
 4 January - 17 April 2010;
 3 May - 23 July 2010

Here are the areas in which volunteers can work:

1. TEACHING:
Assistant teachers are needed in all subjects in the Children and Teen programs. Children’s classes meet Monday-Thursday from 8:45 am – 12:30 pm, Teen classes daily from 8:45- 2:45 pm.
English teachers are needed in the Adult Education Program, where English languages classes range from Literacy to Advanced. Arabic Literacy and Basic Colloquoial Arabic classes are also taught.  Practical life skills classes are offered, such as Parenting, Conflict Resolution, and Nutrition. Adult classes meet for an hour and a half twice per week, with classes running from 3:00-8:00 pm Monday to Thursday and 2:45-6:00 pm Saturday.
*Teachers are needed in a variety of topic areas, such as English, Art, and Hip-Hop coaching and Sports in the Youth-LEAD program, working with at risk Sudanese youth.  Classes are mostly in the evenings.

2. TUTORING:
Working one on one or in very small groups with students who want or need more attention outside of class or to staff a Homework Help table in the evenings. We would like a minimum of 2 hours a week, but more is certainly possible! This time commitment can be as little or as much as you make it: come everyday, or come when you have time.
Children’s tutoring is from 12:30-2pm Mondays to Thursdays.
Adult tutoring is from 3:00-7:00 pm M-Th.

3. MARKETING arts and crafts products: Working in conjunction with the African Refugee Cooperative, you can help find additional shops to carry our products. Also we need volunteers based in the US or Europe to initiate a distribution network for us in your home country.

4. LEGAL INTERNS work with the RLAP program, collecting refugees testimonies and helping them document their cases for resettlement.  These internships are 20 hours weekly.

5. DEVELOPMENT INTERNS work with the StARS Development Director to help fundraise, find donors, write grants and other writing for our blog.  Hours can be arranged.

WHO TO CONTACT about volunteering:  Contact the Program Director of the StARS program with which you want to volunteer directly.  Email a letter identifying your skills, how many hours and the time period you are available to volunteer, and attach your CV.  We'll get in touch about visiting us for an interview.
